YOU MAY HAVE HEARD OF OLD FITZGERALD BOTTLED-IN-BOND, BUT WHAT DO YOU KNOW ABOUT THE MAN WHO STARTED IT ALL—AND LEFT US WITH THE TASTE OF LARCENY?
As a U.S. Treasury Agent who guarded the bonded rickhouses where whiskey is stored and aged, John E. Fitzgerald had access to some of the best Bourbon. Seizing his opportunity, he used his keys to let himself in and thieve a few sips after nightfall. When it came time to dump the barrels, some were found to be unusually light—and exceptionally smooth. These became known as 'Fitzgerald Barrels,' and were later bottled and sold as Old Fitzgerald Bottled-in-Bond.
Today, John E. Fitzgerald's legacy lives on through Larceny and Old Fitzgerald: honoring one man's act of mischief that left the world with extraordinary BOURBONS.
