In 1824 founder Dr. Johann Siegert first produced aromatic bitters in the town of Angostura, Venezuela (today called Ciudad Bolivar). In the 1870’s, Dr. Siegert’s three sons migrated to Trinidad, among them Don Carlos Siegert, who pioneered the brand, establishing Angostura aromatic bitters as an integral ingredient in premium cocktails and ultimately a mainstay of cocktail culture. Using a secret recipe that continues to this day, Angostura aromatic bitters is recognized as the world’s first and best-selling cocktail bitters.
For the brand's 200th anniversary, Angostura has formulated an entirely new formula, built around a base of aged Rum (many don't realize that Angostura is also a renowned producer of Rum), with wormwood as a central ingredient, balancing brighter citrus notes, with herbs and complex spices including angelica root and nutmeg. Angostura recommends it in such cocktails as the Paper Plane, Corpse Reviver #2, a Dirty Martini, or a Penicillin, lending bitter, bright, herbal complexity to a different kind of drink than their classic 1824 formula.
