Contradiction Bourbon, bottled at 92 proof, is a blend of straight bourbon whiskies. It is a marriage of a wheated bourbon we make in West Virginia, and two different rye bourbons we procure from Tennessee and Indiana, respectively. Contradiction is non-chill filtered and is full-bodied, the end-result tasting like a four-grain bourbon.

Old Fashioned

Ingredients
2.5 oz Smooth Ambler Contradiction

1 Teaspoon Sugar

2 Dashes of Angostura Bitters

Splash of Water

Preparation
In a mixing glass combine the Sugar, Bitters and Water then stir thoroughly (you will be creating a paste consistency. Add the whiskey and ice and stir. Double strain into an ice-filled rocks glass. Garnish with either a twist of Orange or Lemon and a maraschino cherry if you so desire. For a more modern version: muddle a wedge of orange and a maraschino cherry.

There was a very sweet lady that used to tend the President’s Bar at the Homestead Resort. In my opinion, she made me the best Old Fashioned that I have experienced in my life. I have always used her version as my litmus for what is a great Old Fashioned. She was from the school of thought of muddling the cherry and the orange together.

TASTING NOTES

Full of oak, dried cherries, vanilla, and cinnamon creating a signature mature bourbon nose. Sweet from the wheat and spice from the rye and a bit of leather round out the palate. Its viscosity creates a smooth and pleasant finish.
